What is a Doula?

The word Doula comes from the ancient Greek word meaning “woman who serves.” A Doula is a trained, non-medical professional who offers emotional, physical and informational support to women and partners through the transformative journey of pregnancy, birth and early parenthood.

My role is to walk alongside you, creating a safe and nurturing space where you feel informed, supported, heard and confident in your choices, free of judgement or expectation.

Why Doula support?

Research shows that continuous support during pregnancy and labour can make a positive difference to a woman’s birth experience and wellbeing beyond birth.

Evidence has linked this support with being more likely to:

-Have a spontaneous vaginal birth

-Have a shorter labour

-Have a lower likelihood of caesarean birth

-Use less pain medication

-Have fewer instrumental births (forceps or vacuum)

-Report greater satisfaction with their birth experience

-Feel more supported, confident and in control during labour

A doula provides continuous, personalised support before, during and after birth. Every doula works a little differently, but my support may include:

During pregnancy

Getting to know you, your values, hopes and concerns
Talking through your birth preferences and helping you prepare for different possibilities
Providing evidence-based information about birth and your options
Practising breathing, relaxation, and/or movement techniques
Helping your partner feel prepared and confident in their role
Offering massage to release muscle tension

During labour and birth

Being there from when you need support through to after your baby arrives
Providing reassurance, encouragement and emotional support
Offering hands-on comfort such as massage, counter-pressure and hip squeezes
Supporting movement, positioning, breathing and relaxation
Helping create a calm and supportive environment
Helping you communicate your needs and preferences to your birth team
Supporting your partner so they can stay present and involved
Remaining by your side through changes to your birth plan or unexpected circumstances

After birth

Checking in and offering support as you settle into life with your baby
Providing a listening ear and space to reflect on your birth experience
Offering post-natal massage

A doula does not provide medical care, clinical advice or make decisions on your behalf. I work alongside your midwife and other healthcare professionals, with my focus being on you, your partner and your experience.

When should I book a Doula?

There's no "right" time to book a Doula. Many families choose to book to their Doula during the second trimester (13-27 weeks) to allow time to find someone who feels like the right fit, ensure availability, and build connection.

Do I need a Doula if I already have a midwife?

Midwives and Doula have different roles, and can work beautifully alongside each other!

Your midwife provides your clinical care, monitoring your health and your baby’s wellbeing. As your doula, I’m there to support you- emotionally, physically and practically. I can help you prepare for birth, talk through your options, provide comfort and reassurance during labour, and support your partner too.

With your permission, I’ll often reach out to your midwife before the birth so we can communicate and work together as part of your support team.

Do you support partners too?

Most definitely! Your partner is a big part of your birth team, and I’m here to support them too.

I can help them feel more feel confident, involved and ready to support you, with plenty of reassurance, practical tools and guidance along the way. And when they need to grab a drink, take a breather or just have a little reset, I’ve got them too!

What areas in New Zealand do you cover?

I am based in South Auckland and provide Doula care across South & East Auckland. If you are outside these areas, feel free to reach out as I may be able to travel or offer virtual support.

Do you offer payment plans?

Absolutely! I want doula support to feel accessible, so I’m happy to offer flexible payment options. We can have a chat about what works best for you and find a payment plan that feels manageable.
